"Be yourself and only you."
Sharing his summer style and also his educational memories over the past 4 years, DeVonn is a recent graduate of the prestigious Biotechnology High School in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He finds that his experience with school is quite unique. This young man came from the small town of Keyport where he performed academically at the top of his class until attending Biotech where students are hand picked. Although in a comparable physical environment, mentally this was hardly the same with students employing different methods to succeed in an extremely competitive environment. DeVonn found that he went from a big fish in a little pond to a little fish in a big pond, a challenging change for anybody.
Fashion evolves and grows as a whole but also on an individual level. Style takes years to develop and even when it has, there's still much more left to discover. Today's June fashion featured individual is Malik, a young streetwear enthusiast. He wasn't always this way though, resenting fashion as a kid and wanting to just get dressed as quickly as possible in order to play. His parents had a feeling that eventually Malik would take an interest in apparel some day, but he didn't entirely believe them. Then, Malik hit his teenage years where changes to who he was changed his interest in fashion too. Malik began to ask his parents for new clothes and shoes especially Nike's and Jordan's proving their previous hunch about their son correct. It just goes to show that we never really know what the next couple of years have in store for us and that sometimes, our parents do know what they're talking about.
When you pour your all into something you're passionate about, not a single ounce of energy is wasted. Originally a soccer player, Marissa, today's spring into summer fashionista, eventually switched to a sport she'd never heard of until her teenage years, field hockey. It was a cool yet quirky game which did not come as easy as soccer did, but Marissa was ready for the challenge. No journey ever goes smoothly, and she's faced her set of difficulties. This athlete's broken a nose and taken a concussion which have halted seasons for her. Yet, the reward far outweighs the risk. Through blood, sweat and tears, Marissa has been a varsity player and starter since freshman year and was awarded for being the best scoring offensive player.
Hawaiian culture never ceases to have bring fascination for the American mainstream and its fashion seems to remind us of what it feels like to step foot on the island paradise. Presenting his men's summer style is Joell whose outfit is from his role as Teihutu, a Hawaiian native, in the musical adaptation of the Nicholas Cage movie Honey Moon in Vegas which takes place partially on the famous Pacific isles. Teihutu is hired by the film's man antagonist, Tommy Korman, to distract Jack Singer, the main character, from finding Betsy, his girlfriend, who Korman "won" from him in a poker game. Although it seems that Teihutu is trying to aid Jack once he steps foot on Hawaii, Jack doesn't really know Teihutu's true intentions.
As May progresses, summer only seems to be a day away bringing its lighter fashion style, long days, cool nights, and unforgettable experiences including those vacations! Aside from bringing her own lovely spring and summer fashion inspiration, Alina also carries warm memories of the small Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba, and speaks of what makes it her favorite spot. Although still a young lady, she's traveled to the island ten times bringing home another adventure to share every visit. The island has just about everything one could ask for packed into seventy square miles. Most special is the time she gets to spend with her family since as she grows older, it becomes a much harder thing to do. From the beaches to the natives, Aruba is truly "One Happy Island."
When we're put in front a crowd we have two choices: to let our fears take over or face them. Not everyone's born with a drive to just take the spotlight, but it can be taught over time with proper exposure. Today's April and spring streetwear fashionista is Yasmeen who's the sister of blog regular, Sarah. However, the younger comes with her own story to tell which is one of growing acting experiences. Yasmeen has developed a love of performing and acting. It's one of few things that allows her to up and counter her shyness. By speaking in front of large crowds, this puts her out of her comfort zone. We applaud her because a life lived out of the comfort zone is a progressive one.
Growing up, if there was one mode of transportation that never failed when you couldn't find a ride, it was a bike. Yet for many kids, it's more than just two wheels because biking can become an exciting sport in the form of BMX. Showing off his spring street fashion is Zach, an avid BMX rider who's been in love with it for as long as he can remember. His main environment for his passion is the street using handrails, curbs, stairs, ledges, and banks to create new challenges. In Zach's case, one man's neighborhood is another man's obstacle. Although indeed a little bit dangerous, the thrill of a new trick to be learned is why Zach has become so involved in this discipline.
